Is Your Roof Ready for Winter? A Late-Fall Roof Check for Bucks County Homeowners

Roofer checking asphalt shingles before winter in Bucks County, PA — Reliable Renovations & Remodeling

Late fall is when most homeowners in Bucks County stop thinking about the roof. The leaves are down, the yard work is finished, and attention moves inside to the holidays. But the few weeks before real cold sets in are exactly when a roof deserves a closer look. Whatever the summer storms and fall winds loosened is still up there, and winter is the season that finds every weak spot. Snow sits on the roof for days, ice forms along the edges, and water that gets in during a thaw has a long, quiet season to do damage before anyone notices.

Roofing is one of the core services at Reliable Renovations & Remodeling. We’re a family-owned company that has been in business for over 30 years, starting in Trenton, NJ, and working today from our office at 1156 Bristol Oxford Valley Rd in Levittown, PA. We’re licensed in PA and NJ, we specialize in asphalt shingle roofs, and we’re IKO and GAF certified. One thing to know up front, as always: we don’t take work in Philadelphia City. Bucks County and the surrounding area are where we work.

Why the Weeks Before Winter Matter

A small roof problem in October can often be handled as a smaller repair. The same problem in February can be a stained ceiling, wet insulation, and a much bigger conversation. Winter doesn’t usually create roof damage on its own as much as it exposes what was already there: a lifted shingle the wind caught in September, flashing that pulled away from the chimney during a summer storm, a soft section of decking that has been getting a little wetter with every rain.

Fall is also a more comfortable season to get work done. Roofing is outdoor work, and it goes more smoothly when the weather is still mild and the roof is dry and clear of snow. Taking care of repairs now helps the house go into winter better protected, instead of waiting for the first bad storm to show you where the problem is.

What You Can Check From the Ground

We never recommend that homeowners climb onto their own roof, especially in cold or wet weather. But there is a lot you can see from the yard, the driveway, or across the street. Look for shingles that are missing, curled, cracked, or sitting at a different angle from the ones around them. Look at the ridge line and the edges, where wind tends to do the most damage. Look around the chimney and any pipes or vents coming through the roof, since those are the spots where leaks most often start. If you notice granules from the shingles collecting where the roof drains, that’s a sign of wear worth mentioning when you call.

Then go up to the attic, if you have one you can get into safely. On a sunny day, look for daylight coming through where it shouldn’t. Look for water stains on the wood, damp or flattened insulation, or a musty smell. Any of these is a good reason to have the roof looked at before winter, not after.

Ice Dams and Why They Start Inside the House

Ice dams are a common winter roof problem, and they confuse a lot of homeowners because the roof itself may be in decent shape. The problem usually starts when warm air from the house escapes into the attic and warms the roof deck. Snow on the upper part of the roof melts, the water runs down toward the colder edge, and it freezes again there. Over time, that ridge of ice grows and holds back water, which can work its way under the shingles and into the house.

When we inspect a roof before winter, we look at the condition of the edges and the areas where ice and water tend to collect, and we’ll tell you honestly what the roof is showing us. Not every leak in January is a bad roof, and not every bad roof shows itself with a leak. A careful look in the fall helps you tell the difference.

Repair Now or Replace Later?

This is the question we hear most often at this time of year, and the honest answer depends on what the roof is telling us. Most of the calls we get are for smaller repairs, and we handle plenty of them: a section of shingles, a leak around a vent, loose flashing along a chimney or wall. When the rest of the roof is in good shape, a well-done repair is the right answer, and there is no reason to talk about anything bigger.

But some roofs are simply near the end of their life. The shingles are worn across the whole surface, repairs keep coming back, or storm damage is spread over large areas instead of one spot. In those cases, patching before winter may still make sense to keep the house dry, while a full replacement is planned for when the weather allows. We’ll walk you through both options and explain what we’d do if it were our own house. When storm damage is involved, we also work alongside homeowners’ insurance companies on the claim. We can’t promise what an insurance company will decide, but we’ll keep the communication clear and straightforward on our side.

Why Homeowners Are Investing in the House They Have

We hear it from families all over Bucks County: with what it costs to buy a new home today, fixing up and staying makes more sense than starting over somewhere else. The roof is a big part of that decision. A sound roof helps protect every other improvement in the house, from a new kitchen to new floors.
